About cycling & running in Matsuyama
Matsuyama Base Miles
Running: Locals run the Ishite river when they want simple base miles without thinking too hard. James runs up and down the Ishite river every weekend, and his loop goes a little over 10k from home to Ishite Temple, back down to Botchan stadium, and home again. The route is 65 km and climbs +129 m, so it works for steady Z2 or light intervals. The 54 km Noro Course gains +607 m, so locals use it when the legs need hills. The Ehime Marathon is the anchor event, and Shiroyama Park feels properly alive on finish day.
Cycling: Bicycles fit Matsuyama because the city centre stays compact, flat, and full of narrow alleys. Locals rent from the four bicycle ports near Matsuyama Station, Matsuyama Castle, Dogo Onsen, and Okaido Shopping Street, where the city keeps 50 bikes in rotation. The coastal route runs 8 km from Imabari to Matsuyama and stays friendly with few inclines. The Yumeshima Kaido gives riders 63 km across Ikina, Sashima, Yuge, and Iwagi Island. The climbs sit east around the Takanawa Peninsula, south toward Saragamine and the Shikoku Mountains, and out at Mt. Sekizen Observatory.
Season: April to July and September suit both runners and cyclists when you want reliable training blocks. Summer gets hot, so locals shift runs to the Ishite river early and keep rides coastal for those Seto Inland Sea breezes. Winter brings cool days, and 5°C weather makes an 8:00 start feel cold until your legs warm up. The city centre still works for easy spins, and the Dōgo Plain stays useful for base miles. Shiroyama Park keeps the marathon mood bright, and the hills stay there for anyone chasing strength before spring.
