Shizuoka Marathon

The Shizuoka Marathon is a certified 42.195 km road race in Shizuoka City, Japan. The course runs point-to-point from the Shizuoka City Hall Shizuoka Government Building to the east exit of JR Shimizu Station. It takes place in March, beginning in the morning, and participants have six hours from the start to finish. Ten cut-off times are scheduled along the route. The race is open to men and women aged 18 and older, with a capacity of 12,000 runners. The course features minimal elevation change, making it suitable for runners aiming for a steady finish or a personal best. It winds through city streets, adjacent natural areas, and locations significant to local history and culture. Mount Fuji may be visible on clear days. Awards are presented to the top ten overall male and female finishers, as well as age-group podiums. All finishers over 75 receive the Ieyasu Prize. Participants also get a commemorative item, and race materials are collected at check-in prior to the event.

Spartan Race Mt. Fuji Susono Super 10K Sprint 5K & Kids Race

Spartan Race Mt. Fuji Susono takes place at YETI in Susono, Shizuoka, with Mount Fuji nearby. Spartan offers three main race options: the Sprint, the Super, and a Kids Race. The Sprint is the short adult race, covering 5K with 20 obstacles. The Super extends the format to 10K and includes more time on the trails. This event is held in the summer, with adult races starting in the morning. The Sprint serves as an introduction to Spartan racing, but it is also for experienced racers aiming to test speed, strength, and obstacle skills without the commitment of a longer course. A fast Sprint can be completed in approximately 40 minutes, though most participants will take longer navigating climbs, carries, walls, mud, and other course challenges. The Super is suited for racers who have completed a Sprint or are comfortable with a 10K distance. Finishing the Sprint contributes to Spartan’s three-race Trifecta challenge.

About cycling & running in Shizuoka

Shizuoka Training Notes

Running: Locals keep running close to the river flats, the rice paddies, and the coast. Shizuoka Marathon gives the city its anchor event, and the course feels flat and fast when the legs behave. Runners snake past the moat of Shizuoka castle, then roll toward rice paddies and a nearly 15km coastal stretch. The 10km race has 54m of climbing when you want a sharper day. You can run 19km with 2m of climbing for intervals. The brief gives no named run club, so locals keep it informal.

Cycling: Locals ride a lot by water first, then point the bike at the hills. The Pacific Coast Bicycle Path and Suruga Bay handle Z2 base miles, and Aim for the Miho no Matsubara gives about 19km when you want a clean spin. Lake Hamana gives an 82km lap for gran fondo legs. The Oigawa route follows the river into the foothills of the Southern Alps. Fujisan Skyline Road climbs to Fujinomiya 5th Station and reaches 2,400m. Izu Peninsula gives mountain challenges up to 1,400m, plus singletrack and muddy doubletrack when the ride turns rough. The brief names no cycling club or bike race.

Season: Late March and early April make the Oigawa route feel right, because cherry blossoms turn easy miles into good miles. November brings fall leaves, and locals use it for steady riding before the cold bites. Fujisan Skyline Road opens its big climbing window from May to October, so summer riders chase that 5-hour climb to 2,400m. Most people stage from Lake Tanuki for that early start. Winter pushes runners toward flat rhythm, and Shizuoka Marathon weather usually sits around 8-12 degC.
