Fukushima City Half Marathon

The Fukushima City Half Marathon is a road race held in May in Fukushima City, Fukushima Prefecture. It begins at Seiden Corporation WINDY Stadium, also known as Shinobugaoka Athletic Field. The primary event is a half marathon certified by the Japan Association of Athletics Federations. A 3 km race, intended for middle school students and novice runners, is also offered. The half marathon course is a loop within Fukushima City. It crosses the central urban area and extends to sections offering views of the surrounding mountains, rivers, and greener districts. The event includes local support and culinary hospitality, an Eve Fest the preceding day, and post-race activities. Notable past participants include Olympic gold medalist Mizuki Noguchi and Guinness World Record holder Yuki Kawauchi. A lottery system selects overall winners and some half marathon finishers for participation in the Yamagata Marugoto Marathon.

Sendai International Half Marathon

The Sendai International Half Marathon is a 21.0975 km road race held in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, typically in May when the city’s tree-lined streets are in fresh green. It is a major running event in the Tohoku region, offering approximately 10,000 spots on a first-come, first-served basis. The race attracts a diverse field, including strong competitors from across Japan, international participants, and many local runners aiming to finish within the 2 hour 30 minute time limit. The course winds through central Sendai, a city known as the “forest city” for its integrated urban greenery. Checkpoints ensure the half marathon progresses efficiently, making it suitable for well-trained participants rather than casual fun runners. Race-day logistics are centered on city accessibility; runners are advised to use public transport due to a lack of parking at the venue. The organizing committee comprises the City of Sendai, local athletics associations, disability athletics organizers, and regional media, contributing to a broad civic character rather than an event solely focused on elite performance.

Toyako Marathon

The ANA Toyako Marathon begins at Lake Toya Promenade Square in Toyako Town, Hokkaido. This spring event features a full marathon, alongside 10 km and 5 km races. The shorter distances include categories for general participants, high school students, and junior high school students, broadening the participant base beyond a typical marathon-only race. The full marathon course winds through the Hokkaido landscape surrounding Lake Toya. The event village and finish-day operations are situated on the lakeside promenade. Local athletes and other guest runners participate, and the aid stations are noted for their food offerings. Entry is on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants must complete a health check sheet in the week prior to the race, and official results with web certificates are published post-event.

About cycling & running in Sendai

Sendai Base Miles

Running: Locals keep running simple in Sendai, with Z2 loops through the city centre, Nishi Park, Omachi Nishi Park, and Tsutsujigaoka Park. The Hirose River gives the city its easy landmark, and the Natori River adds flatter base miles when legs need calm work. The city covers 46 km with 301 m of gain, so intervals can turn hilly fast. The Sendai International Half Marathon is the anchor event, and its course rolls through Aoba-dori Avenue and Jozenji-dori Avenue. Brummel Sendai, Vegalta Sendai, Sony Sendai FC, Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles, and Sendai 89ers keep the local club scene loud.

Cycling: Locals ride Sendai because the city has a laid-back vibe and enough terrain for real training. The zelkova rows make it feel like a proper city spin. GIANT STORE SENDAI Outlet starts the 37km seaside route, and Shichigahama gives some ups and downs before Kimigaoka park opens the Pacific Ocean view. Sendai has 156 cycle routes covering 6,332 km, so base miles never feel boxed in. The Ōu Mountains sit west and north, and Zao highline brings 113 km with 1,946 m of ascent for gran fondo legs.

Season: July and September are the best months, and locals get the most running and riding done then. Summer brings warm, wet days, and August averages 250-300 mm of rain, so steady Z2 and short intervals need flexible timing. Sendai summers stay softer than Tokyo to the south, and Yamase winds can knock down daytime highs during the monsoon season. Winter turns cool and dry, and January averages 1-3°C, so runners keep to parks and city routes while cyclists pick clearer road windows. The Pageant of Starlight lights up December, and the dry air keeps winter training workable.
