About cycling & running in New Plymouth
New Plymouth Training Notes
Running: Locals use the Coastal Walkway when they want flat rhythm, sea air, and easy Z2 without thinking too hard. Pukekura Park sits in the middle of town, and Ratapihipihi Scenic Reserve sits just on the edge when legs want dirt. The Coastal Walkway runs 90 km and gains 72 m. East End parkrun meets Saturdays at 8am, and Feel Good Run Crew keeps the social road miles ticking over. NZ 10km Road & Walks Championships, Coastal Half Marathon, Lake Mangamahoe Cross Country, and Around the Mountain relay give the calendar proper anchors.
Cycling: Locals ride the Coastal Walkway and river paths for easy spins, then point the bike south or east when base miles need bite. Cycling New Plymouth Inc gives road riders a club home, and Taranaki Gravel and Adventure Riding keeps the gravel chat moving. Paritutu-Centennial Park loop rolls about 34 km, and Marfell-Coastal Route loop also runs about 34 km with quiet back streets and waterfront path. Uruti Valley Loop Trail covers 45 km on tar seal and gravel, while Kiwi Road loop gives 55 km. Forgotten World Highway runs 148 km from Taumarunui to New Plymouth, and the climbs sit in hill country, saddles, and short punchy rises.
Season: Spring and summer suit both sports best, with September to February giving the cleanest window for steady weeks, intervals, and long rides. New Plymouth earned sunniest place in the country in 2021 with 2592 sunshine hours, so summer training can feel bright, coastal, and easy to stack. Locals still race year-round, with Off-road Half Marathon in January, Oxfam Trailwalker in March, Around the Mountain relay in November, and Egmont Village Mid Winter Fun Run in winter. Winter stays mild, snowfall stays rare, and runners and riders just shift toward practical layers, firmer warm-ups, and lower-key community days.
