ОУ "N. Y. Vaptsarov" in Shiroka Laka hosts the DECATHLON Thracian Ultra 2026 in the Rhodopes, incorporating Pamporovo and the Perelik and Orlovets hotels into the race weekend. This is mountain running with a wide entry: previous participants receive priority for early entries, but the field is designed for ultra runners seeking a challenging day. The atmosphere is described as a "Unique experience in the Rhodopes," distinct from a conventional road race with added elevation. Expect Rhodope trails passing through historic villages, offering expansive mountain vistas, peaks, lakes, and the range's untamed core. The longer courses focus on "iconic landmarks and the depths of Thracian legends," while the shorter options provide a "quick and scenic introduction to the magic of the Rhodope trails." Practical aspects include a well-marked course with a GPX track, aid stations, live electronic timing, personal baggage transport to Yagodina, course photography, a finisher medal, and ample volunteer support.
One of Shumen's recurring annual races.
Running: Locals run Shumen like a hill town, because the Shumen Plateau sits right above the city. The Adrenaline Route starts from Bohemi in Divdyadovo and takes about 2 hours to reach the Information Center. Route "Lesson on the Forest Trail" starts at Kyoshkove and gives a clean 1-hour hit to Borovets fountain. Route "This is where Bulgaria begins" takes about 4 hours from Kyoshka to the Monument. FC Shumen 1929 and PFC Shumen 2010 are the named clubs here, while runners use the plateau routes for Z2, intervals, and anchor days around Шуменско плато 2026.
Cycling: Locals ride Shumen with the climbs close enough to feel them before the legs are warm. Cycling club “Ilchov bair” is the name to know, and its riders practice XC on the Shumen Plateau. Route No. 1 “Amateurs” gives 5 km with 100 m denivelation from the park Information Centre. Route No. 2 “The Big Ride” gives 16 km with 500 m denivelation from the same start. Route No. 3 “Professionals” starts at Kyoshkove and packs 6 km with 600 m denivelation. Young downhill riders pick steep descents, while road and gravel riders stack base miles toward DECATHLON Thracian Ultra 2026.
Season: April and August bring the best riding months, and locals use them hard for road loops, gravel, XC, and steady Z2. Summer keeps the city tucked inside its cluster of hills, with the eastern Balkans curving around Shumen on the west and south like a horseshoe. The plateau gives runners shade, rocky eastern slopes, and enough rough ground for honest legs. Winter keeps the same terrain in play, but the training mood changes for both sports. Locals stay practical, choose shorter loops when needed, and let the city centre, Kyoshkove, Divdyadovo, and the plateau decide the day.
