About this race

Norseman Xtreme Triathlon begins with athletes jumping from a car ferry into the cold waters of Hardangerfjord, swimming to Eidfjord, Norway. It is an annual point-to-point triathlon with Ironman-distance legs: a fjord swim, a 180-kilometer mountain bike ride, and a 42.2-kilometer run. The field is small, capped at around 290 competitors, with many entries decided by draw and some places linked to XTRI World Tour qualification. Around 40% of starters come from outside Norway, and the average finish time is about 15 hours. The bike starts in Eidfjord with a steep opening climb: the first 40 kilometers ascend to about 1,200 meters above sea level. After the second transition at Austbygdi, the run stays flat for the first 25 kilometers toward Rjukan, then turns into a climb up Gaustatoppen, reaching 1,880 meters. The race is unsupported, so each athlete needs a personal crew in a car for food and drink, and that crew must join them on the final mountain section. Finishers who meet the mountain cut-off receive a black finisher’s top and the name “Norsemen”; athletes who miss it but complete the lower alternative route receive a white top. Cold water is a significant safety concern, and the race has prompted research on cold exposure, biomarkers, lung function, and heart function.
