Osaka Yodo-River Citizens Marathon

The Osaka Yodo-River Citizens Marathon offers both marathon and half marathon distances in Osaka, following the Yodo River. It was established in 1997 by local residents for local residents, emphasizing participation and completion over competitive placement. This event was notable as Japan's first marathon organized solely by citizens and the first held exclusively on a riverbed. The course largely follows the river with out-and-back segments and minimal elevation changes, favoring a consistent pace. The terrain includes road, sidewalk, gravel, pebbles, and dirt. The start is in Asahi Ward, with convenient public transport access from Osaka and Kyoto. While the field is substantial, it has set limits for both distances. The event also includes medical runners, post-race seminars, and sells custom bib holders.

The event features elite sprint races, standard and sprint races for age-group competitors, and a sprint relay, accommodating national-level athletes, individual amateurs, and teams. The standard course involves a 1.5 km swim, a 37.02 km bike ride, and a 10 km run. Sprint distances include a 0.75 km swim, approximately 19-20 km on the bike, and a 5 km run. Elite participants qualify through their national federations, while age-group athletes require Triathlon Japan registration. Relay teams can be all-male, all-female, or mixed. This event is linked to Japan's age-group national championship series and the Osaka Prefectural Triathlon Championship, with organization by Osaka City, Triathlon Japan, and the Osaka Prefectural Triathlon Association.

About cycling & running in Kobe

Kobe Training Notes

Running: Kobe runners get an easy rhythm on the waterfront first. The waterfront loop is 5 km when you want more Z2. The waterfront has a 75 km section of walkway that feels scenic and festive without getting fussy. Suma Promenade gives 2 km along Seaside Park beach. Anchor Kobe Running Circle meets twice a month, and the 2026 Anchor Kobe Running Circle 'X15' Marathon Challenge Run uses the Kobe Marathon course as the anchor.

Cycling: Kobe riders point the front wheel north when the work starts. Mount Rokkō gives the city its real climbing shape, and the mountains rise to 857 m above the narrow strip between Osaka Bay and the ridgeline. The route runs 3 km between Yamada-cho, Kita-ku and Kande-cho, Nishi-ku, so locals use it for base miles and steady efforts. Lake Tsukuhara sits by the Shijimi River side of the route, and Mount Tanjo keeps the ride mountain-adjacent. Osaka Castle Triathlon is the anchor race for the bike crowd.

Season: Autumn gives Kobe the best training window, especially when Mount Rokkō starts turning. Locals stack base miles then, because the city stays simple: coast to the south, mountains to the north, Ashiya east, Akashi west. Summer averages 5 °C, and July brings the wettest block, so runners and riders go earlier and keep intervals short. Winter averages 2 °C and brings cool to cold mornings without significant snowfall, so Z2 keeps going while the climbs feel sharper.
