Kitakyushu Marathon

The Kitakyushu Marathon takes place in mid-February in Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka, Japan. Its main event is a certified 42.195 km marathon. The race also includes 20.7 km, 5 km, and 3 km runs, along with children's races, ensuring the weekend caters to more than just full-marathon participants. The marathon is a Boston qualifier, open to individuals 18 years and older, with a 5 hour 40 minute time limit and checkpoint cutoffs. The course winds through the city and towards the coast, incorporating Kitakyushu’s blend of tourist attractions and industrial zones. These industrial views are significant: the city was instrumental in Japan’s modernization, and the race highlights this local history instead of presenting a standard urban circuit. The final miles are flat and conducive to maintaining pace, making the marathon a sensible option for runners aiming for a personal best. Kitakyushu City and the Kitakyushu Track Field Association are the organizers, and the race is a full member of AIMS.

Fukuoka Marathon

The Fukuoka Marathon is an international men's road race held annually in early December in Fukuoka, Japan, with roots tracing back to 1947. Originally named the Kanaguri Prize Asahi Marathon and first held in Kumamoto, the event found its permanent home in Fukuoka starting in 1959. The current race upholds the legacy of the Fukuoka International Marathon, which, despite a temporary halt after its 75th running, was continued by a successor event that preserved its course and history. The marathon has consistently drawn elite marathoners, not just local participants. International athletes were first welcomed in 1954, and the course has since witnessed a world record. Tsegaye Kebede holds the course record at 2:05:18, and Toshihiko Seko and Frank Shorter are tied for the most wins with four each. A notable local marker is found at Hakata Station: a Fukuoka Marathon monument displays the footprints of previous champions.

About cycling & running in Kitakyushu

Kitakyushu Base Miles By The Strait

Running: Locals run Kitakyushu by linking the city centre to the water, then saving the sharper stuff for Hiraodai. The route covers 46 km and gains 66 m, so it works for steady long runs without turning every session into hill repeats. The waterfront loop covers 8 km with 92 m of gain when you want sea air and rhythm. The Shimo-moji course, Iizuka River Run, and the JINJA RUN shrine routes fit weekday Z2. Kitakyushu Marathon is the anchor road day, and Kitakyushu Hiraodai Trail Running Race 2024 is the trail marker.

Cycling: Locals ride from Moji when they want coast, wind, and easy base miles. Kitakyushu has over 70 cycling routes, so riders can keep it flat, go long, or build a gran fondo day without forcing it. The Kitakyushu (Moji)-Ashiya Route runs about 44 km and gains about 118 m, with fresh, salty breezes near the ocean road and wind turbines. The Kitakyushu (Moji)-Keichiku Route runs about 89 km and gains about 323 m, and the Kitakyushu Airport Connecting Bridge gives that over-the-sea punch. Hiraodai holds the climbs, and Kitakyushu Cycle Festival 30km course is the local anchor spin.

Season: September and October suit both sports best, and most riders in Kitakyushu seem to know it. The coast feels kinder for steady Z2, while Hiraodai keeps the singletrack and trail legs honest. Summer starts early, with sunup around 5 AM, and locals treat 36C heat, humidity, and mountain rain as part of the plan. The coast can still feel milder and much more pleasant than Kyoto, Osaka, Tokyo, or Nagoya, especially when the breeze is working. The brief stays quiet on winter, so runners and cyclists keep the winter call simple: check the day, dress right, and use the flatter routes when needed.
