L'Etape Bulgaria

L'Etape Bulgaria is a road cycling event held in Peshtera, located in the Western Rhodopes. The start and finish lines are situated in the town center. As part of the official L'Etape by Tour de France series, amateur cyclists participate in a closed-road race featuring Tour-style elements, distinct from a standard sportive. Participants can choose between The Race, covering 112 km with 2,140 m of elevation gain, and The Ride, a 58 km route with 1,090 m of elevation gain. The route crosses the Pazardzhik region, ascending to St. Konstantin at 1,350 m. It then follows the road alongside Batak Lake before returning to Peshtera. Competitors in the long-distance categories vie for Tour de France-style jerseys: Yellow, Green, White, and Polka Dot. The top three male and female finishers in the overall standings receive complimentary entry to L'Etape du Tour in France. The event weekend also covers registration, a Tour de France Museum, a Family Ride, and a Kids Race, offering more than just a competitive start for dedicated cyclists.

Bansko Bike Fest

In Bansko, Bulgaria, riders can spend the same festival weekend on mountain enduro trails, road turns, a 1,000-meter climbing rally, and relaxed guided rides that end at a table of local food. Bansko Bike Fest is an annual July cycling festival rather than a single race, with options for experienced cyclists, families, children, and people who mainly want to test bikes, train with stronger riders, or explore the mountain town by bicycle. The harder side of the program includes an iconic climb near Bansko and road tours supported by a police escort, while the social side includes Tasty Bansko, the Avramovo gourmet ride, an expo zone, unlimited bike tests, and kids' games and training on the city park pump track. One edition sent more than 70 riders on a 70 km route with 1,200 meters of climbing to Orteso, the highest inhabited village in the Balkans at 1,555 meters, while more than 80 others rode the mountain trails above Bansko; the field has stretched from local cycling figures to a 77-year-old participant.

About cycling & running in Sandanski

Sandanski Training Notes

Running: Sandanski sits low at about 270 m, so runners get honest base miles before Pirin starts pulling the road up. Locals use the Sandanska Bistritsa River and the Sandanski-Petrich Valley for steady Z2 when the legs need flat rhythm. Pirin National Park gives the mountain edge when intervals need bite. Adventure Skyrun 55/25/12km is the anchor race nearby, and it sets the tone for anyone who likes vert. The local calendar lists no named run club, so runners here keep the focus on routes, weather, and race day.

Cycling: Sandanski gives riders a proper mix, with valley miles first and climbs on the outer south-west flanks of the Pirin Mountains. Locals point wheels toward Sandanski-Lozenitsa-Kalimantsi-Goleshovo when they want a big day, because the 95 km round-trip climbs 2007 m and rolls through Lozenitsa, Kalimantsi, and Goleshovo. Goleshovo brings the hard ascent. Melnik-Melnik Pass is another known cycling spot near town. Tour de Sandanski, L'Etape Bulgaria 112km, Bansko Bike Fest, and ШОСЕ СТРУМЯНИ – ЦАПАРЕВО sit on the race radar. The brief lists no named cycling club.

Season: Spring to early autumn is the clean window for mountain biking around Sandanski. Summer lasts from early June to late September, and the dense foliage makes the oak-forest tracks feel made for steady riding. Locals use shade, streams, old villages, and wild-herb air as part of the rhythm, especially near the Pirin foothills. Winters run from December through February, and the damp, mild weather changes the mood for both sports. Runners can keep aerobic work close to town, while riders treat the valley as the calmer option before the bigger mountain routes come back into form.
