Adventure Skyrun

Adventure Skyrun is a mountain running series in Bulgaria, centered in the Rila area around Borovets and Malyovitsa, held in late August. Participants can select from three distances: Adventure Sky Forest at 12 km, Adventure Sky Lakes at 25 km, and Adventure Sky Run at 55 km. The shortest race involves a 415-meter climb, ensuring even the entry distance is a genuine mountain run, not a flat trail race. The series is organized by Adventure Skyrun and is listed with ITRA. The longest event awards 8 ITRA points, Mountain Level 8, and a Finisher Level of 210. The participant lists are predominantly Bulgarian, featuring runners from clubs like Blagoevgrad Running Club and Crazy Rush, as well as independent entrants. The race website maintains results from multiple past editions, providing the event with a documented history beyond its current participant roster.

Bansko Bike Fest

In Bansko, Bulgaria, riders can spend the same festival weekend on mountain enduro trails, road turns, a 1,000-meter climbing rally, and relaxed guided rides that end at a table of local food. Bansko Bike Fest is an annual July cycling festival rather than a single race, with options for experienced cyclists, families, children, and people who mainly want to test bikes, train with stronger riders, or explore the mountain town by bicycle. The harder side of the program includes an iconic climb near Bansko and road tours supported by a police escort, while the social side includes Tasty Bansko, the Avramovo gourmet ride, an expo zone, unlimited bike tests, and kids' games and training on the city park pump track. One edition sent more than 70 riders on a 70 km route with 1,200 meters of climbing to Orteso, the highest inhabited village in the Balkans at 1,555 meters, while more than 80 others rode the mountain trails above Bansko; the field has stretched from local cycling figures to a 77-year-old participant.

Salomon Vitosha Trail

Salomon Vitosha Trail is a mountain running race on Vitosha, with the race center and start at Aleko Hut. Runners set off at 07:30 and choose between three trail distances: 12 km, 27 km, and 40 km. The short course draws the biggest field, while the longer options give mountain runners a tougher day above Sofia.

About cycling & running in Blagoevgrad

Blagoevgrad Training Notes

Running: Locals run Blagoevgrad like a compact valley base, with easy laps along the Struma River and Blagoevgradska Bistritsa. The 23 km run/jog route keeps the legs honest with only 5 m of gain, so it works for shakeouts and Z2. The 49 km route adds 13 m when you want short intervals without drama. Falcon club is the club name locals point to. Adventure Skyrun, Salomon Vitosha Trail, and Wolf Backyard Ultra Bulgaria sit on the race radar as anchor events.

Cycling: Locals ride from the city into proper mountain-adjacent terrain fast. The routes here average 1 km with 85 m of ascent and 104 m of descent. The climbs stack up toward Strumyani, Petrich, Avramovo, Bansko, Rila, Vlahina, and Pirin. Вело академия, Гравел тур, ДЛОШ END, Bansko Bike Fest, and ШОСЕ СТРУМЯНИ – ЦАПАРЕВО give the calendar its bite.

Season: July and August bring the biggest cycling buzz, with long dry days and enough mountain breeze from Rila to keep base miles moving. March to December keeps the trails in play, and the lower hills of the Rila mountains stay good for singletrack, cyclocross skills, and shuttle days. The shuttle runs cover 3 km with 2,655 m of ascent and 3,920 m of descent. Winter stays mild and brief, so runners keep river loops steady while riders shift toward shorter climbs and cleaner windows.
