Vesuvius Ultra Marathon
The Vesuvius Ultra Marathon is a September trail-running series held in Ottaviano, a village at the base of Mount Vesuvius, close to Naples. Each race distance directs participants towards the volcano, offering four choices: the 65 km Vesuvio Ultra with 4,000 m of elevation gain, the 43 km Vesuvio Marathon with 3,300 m, the 21 km Spartacus Trail with 1,300 m, and the 12 km Vesuvio Short Trail with 900 m. Even the shortest race is demanding, but it provides an entry point for less experienced trail runners without requiring a full-day commitment.
The main ascent of the long race begins after approximately 30 km, when fatigue has already accumulated. All routes commence in Ottaviano and ascend towards Vesuvius, mainland Europe's sole active volcano to have erupted in the past century. From the upper slopes, participants can view the Bay of Naples before descending for local recovery options: Neapolitan pizza, artisanal gelato, a ristretto on a terrace, a swim in the Tyrrhenian Sea, or exploring Naples' UNESCO World Heritage historic center.
