L'Etape Bulgaria

L'Etape Bulgaria is a road cycling event held in Peshtera, located in the Western Rhodopes. The start and finish lines are situated in the town center. As part of the official L'Etape by Tour de France series, amateur cyclists participate in a closed-road race featuring Tour-style elements, distinct from a standard sportive. Participants can choose between The Race, covering 112 km with 2,140 m of elevation gain, and The Ride, a 58 km route with 1,090 m of elevation gain. The route crosses the Pazardzhik region, ascending to St. Konstantin at 1,350 m. It then follows the road alongside Batak Lake before returning to Peshtera. Competitors in the long-distance categories vie for Tour de France-style jerseys: Yellow, Green, White, and Polka Dot. The top three male and female finishers in the overall standings receive complimentary entry to L'Etape du Tour in France. The event weekend also covers registration, a Tour de France Museum, a Family Ride, and a Kids Race, offering more than just a competitive start for dedicated cyclists.

Thracian Ultra 50

The Thracian Ultra 50 starts and finishes in Shiroka Laka, challenging runners across a significant portion of Rhodope terrain. This event is part of a larger trail weekend, alongside the DECATHLON Discovery Race 12, DECATHLON Gela Run 20, and DECATHLON Yagodina Cave Ultra 95, creating a festival atmosphere for mountain running. Expect no asphalt relief on this course, which features 30% paths and 70% tracks, with zero roads. There is sufficient climbing to keep you honest from the first kilometers, as the surface alternates between narrower trails and wider tracks. The finish back in Shiroka Laka is one earned with patience, not by early showing off.

DECATHLON Thracian Ultra

ОУ "N. Y. Vaptsarov" in Shiroka Laka hosts the DECATHLON Thracian Ultra 2026 in the Rhodopes, incorporating Pamporovo and the Perelik and Orlovets hotels into the race weekend. This is mountain running with a wide entry: previous participants receive priority for early entries, but the field is designed for ultra runners seeking a challenging day. The atmosphere is described as a "Unique experience in the Rhodopes," distinct from a conventional road race with added elevation. Expect Rhodope trails passing through historic villages, offering expansive mountain vistas, peaks, lakes, and the range's untamed core. The longer courses focus on "iconic landmarks and the depths of Thracian legends," while the shorter options provide a "quick and scenic introduction to the magic of the Rhodope trails." Practical aspects include a well-marked course with a GPX track, aid stations, live electronic timing, personal baggage transport to Yagodina, course photography, a finisher medal, and ample volunteer support.

About cycling & running in Smolyan

Smolyan Mountain Training Notes

Running: Smolyan runners use the Cherna and Byala river lines for easy base miles, then point uphill into the Rhodope Mountains when Z2 turns into climbing legs. Locals treat Golyam Perelik as the big marker, and the peak rises to 2191m above the town. Trail runners get their anchor events from DECATHLON Persenk Ultra, DECATHLON Thracian Ultra, Thracian Ultra 50, Green Heart Half Ultra Chepelare, and K3 Ultra Gold Border Race. Smolyan has no listed run club in the brief, so locals keep it simple with friends, route files, and race goals.

Cycling: Smolyan riders have plenty to work with, because the area lists 252 cycling routes and the tracked total reaches 22233km. Locals ride asphalt, dirt/gravel road, and singletrack, so a week can look like road intervals, MTB handling, and steady base miles. Sofia to Smolyan gives the serious test, because the route runs 264km, climbs 7376m, descends 6825m, and peaks at 2020m. The climbs sit around the Rhodope Mountains, Golyam Perelik, Pamporovo, Momchilovci, Mugla Pass, and routes like Smolyan Round 80km. Smolyan has no listed cycling club in the brief.

Season: June and July are the clean choice for riding here, and locals use the warm, dry summer for longer loops, gran fondo legs, and mountain trail days. Smolyan’s dry-warm-summer humid continental climate keeps summer training straightforward, but the climbs still ask for respect. Winter changes the whole rhythm, because Smolyan gets cold, snowy conditions and the town also works as a ski resort. Runners shift toward firmer windows and lower routes, while cyclists pick their days carefully or keep the work to Z2, intervals, and cyclocross-style grit when the surface allows.
