The Wichita Mile

The Wichita Mile is a race series in Wichita, Kansas, centered on a single, straightforward distance: one mile. Most races are USATF-certified road miles. Runners are divided into waves based on their estimated pace, allowing them to pursue personal records alongside others running at similar speeds. The series spans the seasons, featuring The Winter One and The Summer Switch Up at Sim's Park, and The Spring 1609 at The Independent School Track. The Fall 5280 is still considering alternative road routes. This series suits new runners not yet ready for a 5K, high school athletes seeking off-season time trials, and anyone wanting a consistent fitness benchmark throughout the year. The Summer Switch Up alters its format each time; one iteration uses weight classes instead of pace waves. Awards recognize improvement: runners can earn age-graded PR awards after surpassing their own Wichita Mile best, though first-time participants must first establish a benchmark. Teams may consist of up to five members, with the top team determined by average age grade. Overall winners, age-graded winners, and the top team receive Fartleks gift cards and entry into the next Wichita Mile event.

DSSW Parade of Stars Impact Weekend

Parade of Stars Impact Weekend is a three-day Wichita event centered on a 1-mile parade walk for the Down syndrome community. It takes place in October, beginning with a free Friday kickoff called Party at the Park at Naftzger Park. Saturday features the Parade of Stars and Walk of Fame at Riverside Park, and Sunday is Advocacy to Action Day at Wichita State University’s Woosley Hall. The Saturday walk is the weekend's focus. The Adaptive Parade begins at 10 a.m., followed by a ceremony, food, and carnival games. Over 1,200 participants and volunteers attend, including families, children, individuals with Down syndrome, supporters, and team groups. The Parade of Stars has supported awareness and advocacy for over twenty years. The newer weekend format includes music, food trucks, education, and an advocacy speaker, rather than relying solely on the walk.

Oktoberfest

Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest is a nine-day Bavarian festival in Ontario’s twin cities, running each October around Canadian Thanksgiving. It draws about 700,000 visitors annually and is known as Canada’s Greatest Bavarian Festival, second in size only to the original Oktoberfest in Munich. The biggest public moment is the Thanksgiving Day parade, the only major parade on Canadian Thanksgiving, broadcast on CTV across Canada and into parts of the northern United States. The festival reflects the area’s German heritage: Kitchener was once called Berlin, many residents have German ancestry, and the word Gemutlichkeit, meaning friendly good cheer, is present during the celebrations. Onkel Hans, the festival mascot, is depicted in Bavarian dress with a beer stein and a sausage, and Miss Oktoberfest is selected based on community involvement and personal character.

Wichita Base Miles And Back Roads
