Osaka Yodo-River Citizens Marathon

The Osaka Yodo-River Citizens Marathon offers both marathon and half marathon distances in Osaka, following the Yodo River. It was established in 1997 by local residents for local residents, emphasizing participation and completion over competitive placement. This event was notable as Japan's first marathon organized solely by citizens and the first held exclusively on a riverbed. The course largely follows the river with out-and-back segments and minimal elevation changes, favoring a consistent pace. The terrain includes road, sidewalk, gravel, pebbles, and dirt. The start is in Asahi Ward, with convenient public transport access from Osaka and Kyoto. While the field is substantial, it has set limits for both distances. The event also includes medical runners, post-race seminars, and sells custom bib holders.

About cycling & running in Sakai

Sakai Base Miles By The Bay

Running: Sakai runners keep things practical, with flat base miles near the bay and steady loops when the legs need rhythm. The main route covers 87 km with 52 m of gain, so it works for Z2, tempo, or simple midweek intervals. The second route covers 85 km with 30 m of gain when you want an easy check-in run. The third route covers 74 km with 18 m of gain for a tighter city loop. The brief names no formal run club, so local training stays informal. Senshu International Marathon is the local anchor, and Osaka Yodo-River Citizens Marathon sits on the wider calendar.

Cycling: Sakai riders get a coastal, flat setup that is good for base miles and easy spins. Sakai River Bike Path stretches approximately 20 kilometers and follows the gentle flow of the Sakai River, connecting suburban neighborhoods with parks, green spaces, and the sea. The course runs 2 km one-way counter clockwise when you want laps without drama. The brief names no cycling club, so bunch rides stay out of scope here. Osaka Castle Triathlon is the sharper anchor event for bike legs and race-day handling. The climbs sit outside the city, because Sakai itself stays largely flat.

Season: Spring and autumn suit both runners and riders best, with mid-March to early April bringing cherry blossoms and cleaner long-run energy. June brings the wettest stretch, so locals shift intervals, Z2, and commuting rides around the rain. Winter mornings drop to 5°C in Sakai. September and October bring typhoon season, so plans stay flexible. Winter mornings drop to 4°C, and snowfall stays light to absent in the city, so both sports keep rolling with layers and shorter daylight windows.
