DECATHLON Thracian Ultra

ОУ "N. Y. Vaptsarov" in Shiroka Laka hosts the DECATHLON Thracian Ultra 2026 in the Rhodopes, incorporating Pamporovo and the Perelik and Orlovets hotels into the race weekend. This is mountain running with a wide entry: previous participants receive priority for early entries, but the field is designed for ultra runners seeking a challenging day. The atmosphere is described as a "Unique experience in the Rhodopes," distinct from a conventional road race with added elevation. Expect Rhodope trails passing through historic villages, offering expansive mountain vistas, peaks, lakes, and the range's untamed core. The longer courses focus on "iconic landmarks and the depths of Thracian legends," while the shorter options provide a "quick and scenic introduction to the magic of the Rhodope trails." Practical aspects include a well-marked course with a GPX track, aid stations, live electronic timing, personal baggage transport to Yagodina, course photography, a finisher medal, and ample volunteer support.

Green Heart Half Ultra Chepelare

Olympic Square serves as the starting point for a demanding mountain day, where trail runners and MTB riders will navigate the same Green Heart course. This event marks the first stop of the Bulgarian Half Ultra Challenge Series 01, and is also part of the Green Heart and Kom Epic challenge, giving it a more competitive field than a relaxed outing. The course options are Trail & MTB LONG, MEDIUM, and SHORT. All start at 1,062 m and ascend into high mountain terrain. The long and short routes reach their highest point near 1,872 m. The long course includes almost 1,900 m of elevation gain, making early pacing crucial. Starts are staggered, with Long + Medium beginning together, followed by Short. All participants finish back at Olympic Square after a day that will test endurance, bike handling, and composure.

Thracian Ultra 50

The Thracian Ultra 50 starts and finishes in Shiroka Laka, challenging runners across a significant portion of Rhodope terrain. This event is part of a larger trail weekend, alongside the DECATHLON Discovery Race 12, DECATHLON Gela Run 20, and DECATHLON Yagodina Cave Ultra 95, creating a festival atmosphere for mountain running. Expect no asphalt relief on this course, which features 30% paths and 70% tracks, with zero roads. There is sufficient climbing to keep you honest from the first kilometers, as the surface alternates between narrower trails and wider tracks. The finish back in Shiroka Laka is one earned with patience, not by early showing off.

About cycling & running in Kardzhali

Kardzhali Training Notes

Running: Locals run Kardzhali by feel, because the brief does not pin down named running routes. The city centre gives easy starts on both banks of the river Arda, with Z2 miles rolling toward the Kardzhali Reservoir or Studen Kladenets Reservoir when you want space. “Lâstovitsa-1905” is the named local club from the brief, with no meet time listed. Green Heart Half Ultra Chepelare, DECATHLON Thracian Ultra, DECATHLON Persenk Ultra, and Thracian Ultra 50 sit as the anchor race names nearby.

Cycling: Locals ride more than they talk about riding here. Kardzhali has 134 cycling routes, while Krumovgrad has 37 routes, Ardino has 28 routes, and Dzhebel has 30 routes when base miles need a bigger loop. 2023-D09 Kardžali, Svatba-Madžarovo runs 79 km with 1,410 m ascent and 1,453 m descent. 2023-D10 Kardžali, Perperek-Shiroko Pole runs 102 km with 1,903 m ascent and 1,897 m descent, which feels more gran fondo than café spin.

Season: May and July pull most people onto bikes here, and spring and autumn bring the nicest all-day rhythm. Kardzhali has hot summers, so locals start early, keep bottles full, and leave the hardest intervals for the cooler edges of the day. The Kardzhali Reservoir to the west and Studen Kladenets Reservoir to the east give rides shape when the heat sits low. Cold winters change both sports, with runners staying closer to town and cyclists choosing steadier Z2, shorter loops, and fewer high-climb days in the Rhodope Mountains.
