Athletics SA Winter Season: Ekiden Relay

SAT, June 13, 2026 · Adelaide , Australia

About this race

The Athletics SA Winter Season Ekiden Relay marks the conclusion of the winter series. It takes place at Bonython Park, structured as a club relay rather than an individual road race. Six runners collectively complete either a marathon or a half marathon, with each participant running a distinct segment. The term 'ekiden' originates from Japan, signifying a long-distance relay, typically conducted on roads. Athletics SA members register via their clubs, and teams can be provisionally entered before final runner confirmation on the event day. The marathon relay comprises legs of 6.195 km, 4 km, 10 km, 8 km, 6 km, and 8 km. The half marathon relay consists of legs measuring 3.097 km, 2 km, 6 km, 4 km, 2 km, and 4 km. Each leg has an allocated start time; however, a team can dispatch its subsequent runner upon the prior runner's arrival, mirroring standard relay procedures. The event also determines winter premiership points across various age categories, with individual athletes earning points based on their leg performance in either the marathon or half marathon. For a club to be eligible for the team victory, it must field at least two male or two female participants.
