The MVD-SZIG Vasi Vasember is an annual triathlon in Szombathely, Hungary. It follows a classic Olympic-distance format: a 1450-meter swim, a 40-kilometer bike ride, and a 10-kilometer run. A recent edition attracted 378 individual athletes and 58 relay teams, accommodating both solo efforts and team participation. The majority of individual participants were men, though women also competed, alongside a significant contingent of local Szombathely residents. The mayor of Szombathely, Dr. András Némény, initiated the race, highlighting its integration into the city's sporting calendar.
Szombathely holds significance in Hungarian triathlon history as the site of the nation's first triathlon race, earning it the title "cradle of triathlon." The Vasi Vasember has been held annually since its inception, establishing a deep local tradition. The event accommodates participants beyond standard age-group categories; for instance, Gábor Varjú, a veterinarian and frequent competitor who uses a wheelchair following a traffic accident, has participated. This inclusivity reflects the race's ethos: it is competitive, yet provides space for relay teams, local participants, and athletes with diverse backgrounds.
