Halve Marathon Oldenzaal starts in the historic center of Oldenzaal, in Twente, and sends runners quickly out toward the rolling countryside around the city. It is an annual road-running event with three choices: a 5 km fun run, a 10.1 km race, and the full half marathon of 21.195 km. This is not the flattest Dutch race on the calendar; the route uses mostly asphalt, but the hills around Oldenzaal give it more bite than a simple city loop.
The half marathon route passes historical neighborhoods, natural areas such as Het Hulsbeek, and climbs or rolling sections around the Tankenberg, Wilmersberg, Hakenberg, and Paasberg. Local and regional runners show up, with enough distance options for beginners, club runners, and more serious half-marathon runners to share the same event. Aid stations are set up every 5 km, and the basics are covered with changing rooms, bag storage, medical support, volunteers, and entertainment for runners and spectators.
