Nummela Backyard Ultra

Nummela Backyard Ultra is a backyard ultra race held in Nummela, part of Vihti in southern Finland. Participants begin a new loop each hour and continue until only one runner remains to answer the bell. The format is straightforward, but the race evolves into a challenge of sleep management, pacing, nutrition, and sheer willpower. The race carries a peculiar historical footnote. Finland's satellite backyard race in Nummela concluded prematurely on lap 33 due to a storm rendering conditions unsafe, with Anton Aro, Juha Jumisko, and Visa Kivinen still competing. A subsequent, separate three-runner runoff was organized in Vihti to determine the Finnish champion and the recipient of the Golden Coin, a qualification for the individual Backyard Ultra World Championships in Tennessee. Visa Kivinen emerged victorious in that runoff.
