The Viskan River Race begins with a mass launch from the beach at Almenäs bathing area in Borås. Canoes, kayaks, surfskis, SUP boards, outriggers, Canadian canoes, and nearly any other paddlecraft share the same start. The primary races cover 10 km, with VRR Motion providing a 5 km option for those seeking a shorter, calmer distance. The event runs from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, featuring packet pickup at the start line and craft-based group organization.
The course follows the Viskan River and Öresjö, then proceeds along the Viskan to Ålgårdsbron and returns the same route. This is not solely a fitness paddle; the route presents sharp turns, narrow passages, bridges, submerged logs, and variable water conditions. While winners receive prizes, the race also serves as a gathering for paddlers. Club racers, SUP racers, casual participants, and first-timers share the water. The event incorporates the Swedish SUP Race Series and the Swedish Canoe Federation's Masters Cup, allowing for a mix of serious competitors and individuals participating in the shorter Motion distance or enjoying the social aspect of the day.
