Maine Lighthouse Ride

The Maine Lighthouse Ride takes place in September along the southern Maine coast, offering four route options: 25, 40, 62, and 100 miles. Cyclists will encounter rolling terrain, not flat paths, with routes designed to showcase views of the Atlantic Ocean, Scarborough Marsh, and several lighthouses. The event accommodates various skill levels, allowing both those seeking a shorter supported ride and those aiming for a century to select a suitable distance. The ride benefits the Eastern Trail Alliance, the organization responsible for developing, preserving, and advocating for the Eastern Trail, a multi-use greenway in southern Maine. Supported rest stops, featuring snacks like pickles and PB&Js, are a highlight. The day concludes with post-ride activities, including a meal and two beers. Now in its twenty-third year, the event has established itself as a local cycling tradition.

Kennebec Savings Bank East Bayside Trail Fest

On Diamond Street in Portland's East Bayside neighborhood, the Kennebec Savings Bank East Bayside Trail Fest brings together runners, walkers, and cyclists for a June morning featuring three options: the Trail to Ale 10K, the Bayside Ride, and the Trail Mix 2-Miler. The 10K revives the Trail to Ale race, the ride is a non-competitive 15- or 30-mile group outing, and the 2-miler is designed for families, beginner runners, and those new to the trails. The event is based at 38 Diamond Street and is closely linked with Portland Trails, aiming to encourage activity on the local trail network. Hundreds of runners, bikers, and walkers attend, and the morning concludes with a Diamond Street block party offering music, food, local beer, cider, and spirits. The festival also benefits the Bicycle Coalition of Maine, and its brief history already includes a second annual running.

About cycling & running in Portland

Portland Base Miles By The Bay

Running: The Back Cove loop runs 6 miles and stays mostly flat with one slight rise by I-295. The waterfront trail runs 15 miles out and back on an old rail corridor, with harbor and ocean views doing the work. Western Promenade Park starts a good West End Tour over Libbytown and Stroudwater, then Bramhall Hill gives the steep bit. Runaways Run Club brings the biggest weekly crew in Southern Maine. Valor track club owns Tuesday nights at Fitzpatrick Stadium. Maine Marathon and WEEKLY BACK COVE SERIES 2026 feel like anchor events.

Cycling: Cyclists use Back Cove and Eastern Promenade for urban greenways, then point south from Bug Light Park when Z2 needs less stopping. Portland to Cousins Island gives smooth roads, wide shoulders, rolling terrain, and a 33-mile option with 325 m of gain. The 5-mile option has 823 m of gain. Portland Velo Club is the big club here, and Forest City Cycling of Portland has roots back to 1988. Greater Portland NEMBA and Single Track Sisters keep the singletrack side moving. Dutton Hill, Fire Hydrant Hill, and the Freeport-to-Brunswick hills hold the climbing.

Season: Summer gives Portland its best base miles, with mild highs averaging near 80F or 26C and long evenings for intervals, pub runs, and no-drop rides. Locals use May through September for the big rhythm, from the John Andrews Memorial Eastern Trail 5K Walk/Run to Maine Lighthouse Ride 2026. Back Cove gets busy in a good way, and the coast keeps rides feeling fresh. Winter changes the kit and the pace. January highs sit near freezing, lows hit 13F, and about 60 inches of snow pushes runners toward cleared loops while cyclists mix trainers, gravel windows, and cyclocross grit.
