Mitre 10 Mega Wainuiomata Hill Run

The Mitre 10 Mega Wainuiomata Hill Run begins in central Wainuiomata, Lower Hutt, directing runners and walkers toward Wainuiomata Hill. This event offers 6.5km and 10km road and path options, along with walking categories, a 6.5km route suitable for buggies, and a flat 1km Kids K Dash for children aged 5 to 10. The 6.5km Half Hill route ascends to the lookout before returning to town. The 10km Full Hill route crosses the hill and returns, reaching a road summit of approximately 195m above sea level. The course consists primarily of sealed road or pavement, with the climb being the main challenge instead of rough terrain. Prams, front packs, and trikes are permitted in the buggy category, contributing to the event's family-friendly nature for a hill race. It also benefits the Kokiri Marae Pataka Kai, providing a community purpose beyond the race itself.

The Woolshed Run – Barefoot XTRAIL Series

Belmont Regional Park forms the basis for The Woolshed Run – Barefoot XTRAIL Series, a traditional trail running event held near a historic old woolshed close to the venue headquarters. The course proceeds through pine plantation, native forest, and open, maintained tracks, offering glimpses of the Hutt Valley through breaks in the trees. This event features technical and diverse terrain with significant ascents, distinct from a simple run on manicured paths. The courses utilize shared trails, farm roads, and forestry paths originating near Stratton Street. Runners will encounter open farm-track climbs, river and forest segments, creek crossings, and sufficient technical sections amidst natural surroundings to provide a genuine off-road experience. Participants will range in ability, and due to limited parking, car-pooling is customary.

Battle at Boulder Hill – Barefoot XTRAIL Series

Belmont Regional Park provides the challenge: dense native bush, open ridgelines, and rolling farmland form a scenic and challenging trail run. It is part of the Barefoot XTRAIL season as a true off-road event, the type of race where the views are earned, not given from a flat path. From the high points, you get expansive views across Wellington Harbour, the Hutt Valley, and out toward the coast. The course begins with a climb from the valley floor through native bush, then transitions to ridge running, sweeping descents, and a final ascent before returning to the start. Expect rugged Wellington terrain, consistent changes underfoot, and enough technical trail to maintain focus. This event is for runners who appreciate varied elevation and do not mind earning their outstanding views, offering a community-focused off-road atmosphere instead of a polished big-road-race feel.

About cycling & running in Lower Hutt

Lower Hutt Training Notes

Running: Locals run the Hutt River walkway when they want simple base miles and a clean out-and-back. Most people run 5km before turning around and coming back. Hutt Valley Harriers meet at the HVH clubrooms on Petone Recreation Ground at 1:30pm on Saturdays through the winter season. Hutt Valley Runners move around Harcourt Park, Te Ara Tupua, Whitemans Valley, Pāutahanui Inlet, and the Remutaka Reverse. The Hutt Half Marathon, The Woolshed Run, Battle at Boulder Hill, and Lower Hutt parkrun are the anchor runs.

Cycling: Locals ride the Hutt River Trail for steady Z2, because the route runs 29km from Petone toward Te Marua and links into Kaitoke Regional Park and the Remutaka Rail Trail. The Pomare to Waterloo Station segment runs 5km. The Pito-One to Melling project adds 3km of separated riding. 7km. The Crazyman sits as the local anchor event, and the Remutaka Cycle Trail gives the bigger gran fondo legs.

Season: Spring and autumn suit Lower Hutt best, because runners and riders get useful conditions without turning every session into a weather call. Summer brings relatively warm days, so locals hit the Hutt River Trail, Petone foreshore, Days Bay, Wainui Trail Park, and Belmont Regional Park early when intervals or singletrack are on the plan. Winter stays mild, but occasional storms push runners toward club runs, parkrun routines, and flatter river paths. Cyclists use the same season for base miles, shared-path spins, and hill repeats when Wainuiomata Hill or the Remutaka Ranges are playing nicely.
