Teretonga Park and Oreti Beach give this winter-series stop a plain, southern edge: practical, exposed, and built around getting the work done. It is part of Southland Triathlon and Multisport Club's Wensley's Cycles Winter Series, featuring duathlon and multisport events rather than a straight road race feel. Expect a mix of run, bike, and for multisporters, kayak legs, with options that suit people turning up for a hard hit-out as well as those just keeping winter fitness honest. The bike leg is open to "road bikes or mountain bikes", which says a lot about the tone: bring what you have, race the format, and do not overcomplicate it.
Teretonga Park provides a practical winter setting for this event: arrive, select your format, and compete. Wensley’s Cycles Winter Series Event 1 is the "opening race in a winter duathlon and multisport series," offering duathlon, multisport, and running-only options instead of a single set format. It fits mornings where beginners, juniors, and experienced competitors can start together, each pursuing their own objectives. The appeal lies in the "range of race formats and distances," not in elaborate course narratives. Participants can opt for running only, the run-bike-run format, or add kayaking for the multisport option, with a junior run available for younger competitors. It functions as an "accessible winter multisport or duathlon event": a clear briefing, all races starting concurrently, and sufficient variety to choose an effort level appropriate for your current fitness.
Running: Locals run Queens Park when they want something easy and central, and Invercargill parkrun keeps it simple on mostly sealed paths around the duckponds. The route covers 5km with 30m of ascent. Kew Bush, Otepuni Gardens, Waihopai River and Donovan Park all fit steady Z2 days. Southland Harriers gives the club scene its backbone. Invercargill Endurance Challenge, Southland Harriers Shoe Clinic Series, KartSport Challenge 5k & 2k, Ascot Park Hotel Southland Marathon, and Surf To City give the calendar proper anchor events.
Cycling: Locals ride flat base miles first, because the Southland Plains make it easy to stack time without hunting hills. Invercargill Bluff Trail gives riders about 25km of off-road riding between Invercargill and Bluff, and the final 16km runs as a sealed off-highway shared trail. Southland Traverse brings the bigger day out, with Invercargill sitting 104km from the start and Motupōhue Bluff sitting 137km from the start. Cycling Southland runs the track side from the Invercargill Velodrome. Wensley’s Cycles Winter Series, ILT Criterium National Championships, and Vital Signs Fight for Yellow keep the crit and race legs honest. Motupuhoe/Bluff Hill is where the climbs are.
Season: February and March are the best months for riding, and summer gives you long evenings for intervals after work. Invercargill gets nearly 16 hours of daylight at the late-December summer solstice, so locals can stretch a gran fondo, beach run, or easy singletrack session without rushing. January 2018 brought three straight days above 30°C, so summer can still bite. Winter gives you only 5 hours of daylight. Southland Triathlon and Multisport Club Winter Series keeps people turning up. The weather can be bitterly cold from June to September, and measurable snowfall is occasionally seen.
