Maratona di Salemi

Maratona di Salemi is a 22 km hilly race in Salemi, a historic hill town in western Sicily. Runners meet in Piazza Alicia at 10:30, and the route mixes asphalt and dirt rather than staying on smooth city roads. Despite the name, it is closer to a long trail-style half marathon than a standard road marathon. The course starts in Salemi’s medieval center, moves through cobblestone streets, then climbs into countryside with vineyards, family-run wineries, local producers, and archaeological sites along the way. Runners stop during the race for Sicilian wine, regional food, and live music, treating eating and drinking as part of the run rather than a post-race extra. The entry package includes registration, a pre-race dinner, a finish medal, and access to the after-party, but there are no prizes.
