About this race

Morat-Fribourg, or Murtenlauf in German, is a point-to-point road race held annually on the first Sunday of October, traveling from Morat to Fribourg. Its primary distance is 17.17 km, presenting a challenge akin to a tough classic race rather than a typical urban run, featuring approximately 388 meters of elevation gain across its hilly terrain. The event accommodates a wide range of participants, from serious national and international elite competitors to recreational runners forming the bulk of the field. The race route commemorates a historical account of a Confederate messenger who is said to have run from the Morat battlefield to Fribourg bearing news of a victory over Charles the Bold. A related legend mentions the messenger carrying a linden branch, with a linden tree said to have sprouted where he fell after delivering his message. The contemporary race was established following a revival of the route by Adolphe Flückiger, who later organized it with Beda Hefti, initially for ski club members before opening it to the general public. A shorter 8.68 km option from Courtepin is available for those seeking to participate in the tradition without tackling the entire climb into Fribourg.
