Tryavna Ultra

Tryavna Ultra is a July mountain race series based in and around Tryavna, a historic town in Bulgaria’s Balkan Mountains. The main running options range from short trail distances to long ultramarathon efforts, with past and listed courses including 141 km, 100 km, 76 km, 42 km, 23 km, and 21 km routes. The longest listed ultra reaches 141 km with 5,840 m of climbing, while the 76 km route adds 2,820 m and the 23 km route adds 706 m. The event also includes mountain-bike races of 70 km and 25 km, duathlon formats pairing MTB and running, and a free 3 km run for beginners, children, and tourists that uses the same start and finish area as the longer distances. The long route goes through the architectural park of Bozhentsi, woodlands in the Bulgarian Woman eco-park, three municipalities, and many villages. Runners also pass through forests, fields, and the old town of Tryavna, with the finish set in the town center. Tryavna Ultra counts as a qualifier for Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc, with the 141 km race carrying 6 UTMB points and the 76 km race carrying 4. Every finisher receives a medal, and the field ranges from serious ultra runners chasing qualification points to local trail runners, cyclists, duathlon racers, first-timers, children, and tourists trying the short course.

DECATHLON Thracian Ultra

ОУ "N. Y. Vaptsarov" in Shiroka Laka hosts the DECATHLON Thracian Ultra 2026 in the Rhodopes, incorporating Pamporovo and the Perelik and Orlovets hotels into the race weekend. This is mountain running with a wide entry: previous participants receive priority for early entries, but the field is designed for ultra runners seeking a challenging day. The atmosphere is described as a "Unique experience in the Rhodopes," distinct from a conventional road race with added elevation. Expect Rhodope trails passing through historic villages, offering expansive mountain vistas, peaks, lakes, and the range's untamed core. The longer courses focus on "iconic landmarks and the depths of Thracian legends," while the shorter options provide a "quick and scenic introduction to the magic of the Rhodope trails." Practical aspects include a well-marked course with a GPX track, aid stations, live electronic timing, personal baggage transport to Yagodina, course photography, a finisher medal, and ample volunteer support.

About cycling & running in Sliven

Sliven Base Miles And Blue Rocks

Running: Sliven gives runners a proper mountain-adjacent setup, with the city centre sitting under Sinite Kamani and Karandila. Locals use the foothills for steady Z2, hill reps, and slow days when they just want to meander and look back over the Thracian plains. The route runs 54 km with 60 m elevation gain, so it works as a clean shakeout. Sinite Kamani Nature Park turns normal runs into climbing days fast. The brief names no Sliven run club, so the race calendar carries the community signal. Tryavna Ultra, По стъпките на траките, and DECATHLON Thracian Ultra 2026 sit on the radar.

Cycling: Sliven rides bigger than the map suggests, because the climbs start right above town. Locals go toward Karandila, Bulgarka, Kutelka, and The Blue Rocks when they want real work instead of flat base miles. The routes here cover 2 km with 1,702 m of ascent, so it's a proper climbing day. Велорали Средна гора and НШ младша възраст Сливен are the anchor race names to watch.

Season: March to November is the riding window, and May and July are the months when more people get on the bike here. Summer stays relatively warm, so locals start early, keep bottles honest, and save the exposed climbs for smart hours. The Bora wind can turn a simple Z2 ride into work, especially on open roads out toward Peach Valley. Winter stays mild, but the sports change shape. Runners keep using the lower loops and city-side climbs. Riders get pickier with the rough Blue Rocks trails, because Sliven routes already include rocky and loose scree sections before winter adds its own bite.
