The Ötscher Trail is a trail running event held in early summer in Lackenhof am Ötscher, located in Austria’s Mostviertel region. The most demanding race is the Vertical Race: a little over 5 km with over 1,000 metres of elevation gain and a 2-hour time limit. The event also offers several other races, including the Easy Trail, Speed Trail, Skyrace, Marathon Trail, and a Kids Trail for younger participants. The Vertical Race begins at the Ötscher Trail Arena and ascends the ski slope before transitioning to a flatter singletrack path into the Weitental. It then climbs sharply to the aid station at Ötscherschutzhaus, continuing through mountain pine and challenging terrain to the summit of the Großer Ötscher. The event, which has been part of Austria’s mountain marathon tradition since 2004, attracts international trail runners to the Ötscher-Tormäuer Nature Park. The Vertical Race is a qualifying event for rankings such as the HERO and KING/QUEEN classification, the Vertical Austria Series, and the Austrian Volkslaufcup.
