UTLO, the Ultra Trail Lago d'Orta, is a trail-running weekend held on the Omegna lakefront in Piedmont. The races begin and end by Lake Orta, leading runners onto the mountain paths above the water. The event offers multiple distances: a 12 km route for beginners, a 58 km ultra with over 3,600 meters of elevation gain, and 34 km and 21 km options, alongside a UTLINO Kids Run for children. Starts are staggered throughout the weekend, transforming the lakefront from early morning quiet to a lively atmosphere with music, spectators, aid stations, and evening finishes.
The courses traverse Omegna, Quarna, Nonio, Madonna del Sasso, Boleto, and other villages surrounding Lake Orta. Runners will follow trails through forests, meadows, historic hamlets, and to high vantage points overlooking the lake and adjacent mountains. UTLO operates under semi-self-sufficiency rules, requiring participants to carry their own gear, water, and food, utilizing aid stations for replenishment. The event attracts seasoned mountain runners, novice trail racers, children, families, and spectators, with an expo village and outdoor stalls situated on the Omegna lakefront. It has become a highly regarded race in Piedmont for mountain running and ultra trail events.
